~PlayTape~ HOME / BEACH / CAR / EVEN ON YOUR BOAT * SOLID STATE / TRANSISTORIZED

Here I sit in my music room Rod Mckuen in the background. Yep I got the Lp. I discovered Rod On PlayTape. If your into collecting playtapes for nostalgic reasons then don't pass on the San Sabastian strings. I have a couple of them and Rod's Poetry really rocks.

Ok People, I'm going to show you a few aftermarket players. You could find them in dime stores and cheap chain stores like TG&Y. They were generally sold to those who could not afford a genuine PlayTape Trademarked Player.

Tote-a-tape Cartridge Player with radio

Tote-a-tape Cartridge Player with radio

I picked up this Tote-a-tape the other day on ebay doing some obscure search! I thought it was pretty cool. It came with 6 tapes one being a very rare copy of Al Caiola's long player "The Magnificent Seven" The lot included the obligatory Herb Alpert. At a closer glance the 3 Herb Alpert PlayTapes had a familiar appearance. I knew I had scored some rare one's! Then it hit me! These were Extremely rare PlayTapes imported from Australia! I lost mine in a fire along with over 500 tapes! It's cool to have a few back! I have posted one just so you can see what they look like. Another example of PlayTape Paste Overs! :) For some reason Aussies cannot use US titles on their albums. So, they changed the titles by doing paste overs with a new label over the old one. These are the only 2nd generation paste overs I have seen. Note the smaller PlayTape logo and the sloppy hack job on cutting the labels. Enough about the tapes!

Check out this killer Tote-a-tape! It has a radio with a real dial and window indicator! Other then the Discatron it's the only 2 track player I've seen with that so far! To Cool! This baby put's out a full 0.4 Watts! It runs on four C cells. this has one head an ear phone jack an on/off volume control and the selector says it plays stereo tapes! The unit is manufactured by the American Radio Corporation so it's pretty sturdy and built better then most players. I'd like to make a point about these after market players. Some of them burn up batteries! If you think yours is broken and it's playing slow. It more then likely needs a fresh set.

Gibson 2 Track Cartridge Player

Gibson 2 Track Cartridge Player

The Gibson 2 Track Cartridge Player. A very cool unit. This model was licensed and marketed by a few companies under different names. The Gibson has a tone control and It uses 4 D cells or can be plugged in with an adapter and has a output for an earphone. This unit does not do stereo.

Electro Brand 2 Track Cartridge Player

Electro Brand 2 Track Cartridge Player

The Electro Brand runs on 4 D cells. Just like the Disneyland PlayTape TM. Players it has one head that is moved manually to change tracks by a lever located on the side. It comes with an earphone and an input for an ac adapter. No stereo.

Valiant 2 Track Cartridge Player

Valiant 2 Track Cartridge Player

The Valiant Corporation put out a pretty extensive line of 2 track players. Here is one of their best efforts! This one plays stereo tapes. It has a tone control, speaker jack and also works with an ac adapter. This model has one pick up and about the loudest volume I have heard from a portable 2 track player.

The Mayfair Swing A Tune!

The Mayfair Swing A Tune

These two Track Players are all just too Cool! You'll want to collect them all. I have been collecting for quite some time and I have a few other aftermarket Players that I will be showing very soon! Anyway the Mayfair was a pretty popular player. There is a common flaw with these and that is the epoxy they used to put on that fancy face was not meant to stick for nearly 50 years so chances are you will have to glue it back on.

This model 412 has two playback heads. It has a tone and volume control on the top. It runs on 4 d cells which I believe were included in the box! It also came with an earphone and could be plugged into an ac adapter which was optional.

You'll find many of the aftermarket players came complete and ready to play right out of the box! All you had to do is stick on the cool flower power stickers, pop in the batteries and you were rockin'. Mom was happy listening to her Country and you had your earphone in cranking the Beatles! These Items were not included with the Original PlayTape Players.
